About us and the boat

About us and the boat:

We were lucky enough to retire early at the start of 2013 so we could head off and "live the dream" on board our Nordhavn 47 Trawler Yacht. The idea is to see some of the planet, at a slow 6 - 7 knots pace. There are no fixed goals or timings, we just had a plan to visit Scotland and then probably the Baltic before heading south.

The idea is to visit the nicer areas in these latitudes before heading south for warmer weather. If we like somewhere, we will stay for a while. If not, we will just move on. So, for the people who love forward planning and targets, this might seem a little relaxed!

If anyone else is contemplating a trawler yacht life, maybe our experiences will be enough to make you think again, or maybe do it sooner then you intended!

The boat is called Rockland and she is built for long distance cruising and a comfortable life on board too. If you want to see more about trawler yachts and the Nordhavn 47 in particular, there is a link to the manufacturers website in our "useful stuff" section. For the technically minded, there is a little info and pictures of the boat and equipment in the same section

Rolls-Royce (just to get your attention) and Romsey x 2

Remember the comment about re-fitting the PC and people with large clumsy hands? Well, it actually went back quite easily. Pleased to report that the navigation PC works just fine and is rocket fast with the new SSD drive which should be robust out to sea as well. Well worth doing.

Of course, fitting the nice new motor to the black water tank pump was a nightmare. Partially as it involves leaning through the gap you get when removing a drawer for access and partially as the nice new motor has a bigger gearbox assembly (good!) that fouls 2 of the mounting screws that hold the top and bottom of the pump together (very, very bad). The joys of maintenance are unbounded. The nice aroma from a pump that is connected to the holding tank just adds to the general happiness. Of course, as it is under the guest cabin bunk, the crew's slightly concerned father said that we could leave the hatch over the heads open until he went to bed. Wonder why?

Whilst at Hamble Point, we visited Mottisfont House near Romsey. Lovely National Trust spot and well worth a visit, even on a Bank holiday weekend:

Our last visit to Romsey was less pleasant - we had to visit our furniture in store which had suffered in the floods earlier this year. Of course, the container at ground level had to be the one with old photo albums etc in it. Nice smell too that doesn't come across in these pictures properly:

Very very happy about this and now busy preparing an insurance claim. Anyone know a person who can value a stamp collection from the captain's childhood for us??

We had an evening visit from Lars and Birgit Klawitter - the man who runs the Rolls-Royce bespoke area. More boating types, we enjoyed Birgit's cake, boating stories and seeing Birgit getting acquainted with Patrick. As per Lars Facebook entry - "it was love at first sight":

We, of course, loved her cake.
