About us and the boat

About us and the boat:

We were lucky enough to retire early at the start of 2013 so we could head off and "live the dream" on board our Nordhavn 47 Trawler Yacht. The idea is to see some of the planet, at a slow 6 - 7 knots pace. There are no fixed goals or timings, we just had a plan to visit Scotland and then probably the Baltic before heading south.

The idea is to visit the nicer areas in these latitudes before heading south for warmer weather. If we like somewhere, we will stay for a while. If not, we will just move on. So, for the people who love forward planning and targets, this might seem a little relaxed!

If anyone else is contemplating a trawler yacht life, maybe our experiences will be enough to make you think again, or maybe do it sooner then you intended!

The boat is called Rockland and she is built for long distance cruising and a comfortable life on board too. If you want to see more about trawler yachts and the Nordhavn 47 in particular, there is a link to the manufacturers website in our "useful stuff" section. For the technically minded, there is a little info and pictures of the boat and equipment in the same section

Patrick's pocket money is safe

After the disturbing update on Patrick’s alleged love child, the poor little chap was scanning his email regularly for a response from Bron the spaniel. Would the PSA be coming after him or was this the stunt that he suspected, performed quite wickedly by Steve, Bron’s dad.

Well, he was hard to live with whilst waiting for news. Linda gave him several cwtchs and (worryingly) introduced him to champagne too. We think he is far too young for fizz and cheese straws but he seemed to enjoy them:

Even if later he needed a little sleep:

He perked up a lot when he got a mail from Bron confirming that Steve was playing bad games. The mail is below, just to make it very clear that Patrick is innocent (this time). The parts of it that might cause you amusement at Steve’s expense are to be ignored but just in case you don’t, Helen is his lady friend who hasn’t been boating much before and Precious is her dog.

Dear All,
My dad thought it was funny and it seemed such a good idea at the time. He says he's very sorry now. I gave him my look and he fessed up. He's a bit quiet now.
We have been sailing last week. He's been banned from taking any of us on the boat again unless it is flat calm.
We all went to Oxwich Bay (5hours) from home and just past Swansea for a few days to escape the heat. No wind but we rolled and rolled and rolled in the swell all day and all night. Helen wasn't happy.
Dad went swimming as soon as we got there. He got the dinghy tow rope round the propellor. Then we went on the beach to escape the rolling. It was about a mile. On the way back The outboard refused to start and Helen fell in too. We started to row all the way back. Dad got tired and swore at the engine so it started.
When we got back we had to start the big engine cos we were drifting. He'd forgotten to let out more anchor chain in all the excitement of clearing the propeller and the tide came in. Silly daddy.
When we had sorted that out he had to have another swim to chase the dinghy which had gone off on its own as the new tow rope didn't want to stay knotted.
Then we rolled around all night.
He was going to,sail, back in the night but was sooo tired cos we'd set out at 4am and didn't think he could do,that so,we rolled all night.
We set off for home and the wind was supposed to be light 2 to 3. They lied. It was 5. Right on the nose from the east and against the tide. Me, Helen and Precious had to stay in the cabin for ages. Waves came right over the boat and we went up and down an awful lot. It was horrid.
Dad says the waves went right over the wheel house.
Not been out in weather like that since he came from the Scilly Isles in 1997! I would not know about that but it was horrid.
Just as we got into the nice smooth bit after a very rough Rannie we had to turn round and go back through the overfall to Sully Island to help the coastguard look for 3children who got washed off the causeway. They were ok so we turned around and did the washing cycle all over again.
Precious will not get back on the boat and Helen keeps telling him off and she's never going sailing again either.
Serves him right for being mean to you
I've had a hair cut today too.
Can I come to stay with you please. You only seem to sail in smooth stuff.
Lots of love
Bron
Xxx
